You are here: Rotherhithe \ News \ RESTAURANT SERVES UP MEAT FROM CITY FARM

A Rotherhithe restaurant is serving up meat which comes from animals at the local city farm.
Simplicity restaurant sources meat from Surrey Docks Farm, which is then butchered by an expert from Borough Market.
The scheme, which has been running for just under a year, was promoted at the farm's first ever 'Sausage Day', which took place on Saturday (May 3) and featured demonstrations of how the farm's animals still serve the local community once they have been sent to the abattoir!
Borough Market butcher Eric Reeve demonstrated the ancient art of sausage making (pictured right) to crowds of over 200, who then happily snaffled up the produce - both cooked and to take home.
Farm manager Kath Whittam told the 'News': "A good time was had by all! Fresh farm sausages from our own pigs flew off the shelf - as fast as he made them we sold them or barbecued them! Eric has taken one pig away with him to make more sausages with - they will be available from the farm on Friday (May 9)."
Local restaurant owner Laurence Lingard has been serving the farm's meat at his popular Simplicity restaurant on Tunnel Road since last year and this week told the 'News': "It just works really, really well! The produce is more expensive for me because the farm only sends small numbers of animals to the abattoir but they have to make money to survive, so me buying it off them and promoting them at the restaurant works really well for both of us.
"People like buying the local meat, both as a way of supporting their community and to eat, because it tastes really great."
At the 'Sausage Day', Mr. Lingard bought around fifty packs of sausages, so is optimistic about having local produce on his menu for at least the next month!
