7 August 2008 I AM WRITING about the recent I Love Peckham festival.
On Sunday 20 July, I spent the day visiting a number of events including the concert at the main square in front of Peckham library and art exhibitions at the CIP studios and the White Horse public house on Rye Lane. Although these events were interesting, they were very poorly attended. I then visited the open day at the Spike Surplus Scheme in Consort Road. Hundreds of adults and children were peacefully enjoying live music, the community garden, healing area and children's space, including free clothes for people to take away.
Having experienced first hand how loved the Spike Surplus Scheme is by the local community, I was appalled to discover that it is threatened with closure by Southwark Council, who intend to sell the land to property developers. It seemed bitterly ironic that the many I Love Peckham events, which are sponsored by Southwark Council to build bridges in the local community were unattended, whilst the Spike was not only not receiving any financial support from Southwark Council, they are threatening its very existence.
It inevitably leads one to question the council's commitment to the community when they are knowingly destroying such a thriving and invaluable community resource especially in a troubled inner city area such as Peckham which so desperately needs such projects as the Spike Surplus Scheme in these difficult times.
