BUTCHER ON HIS WAY AS SURREY GO DOWN

BUTCHER ON HIS WAY AS SURREY GO DOWN

26 September 2008

A TUMULTUOUS week at Surrey has seen the team relegated, their coach lose his job and their star player hint that he might be off too, writes Gavriel Hollander...

Following relegation from the LV County Championship last week in a season where the Brown Caps finished bottom of the table without registering a win, coach Alan Butcher has reportedly parted company with the club.

Although Surrey have so far refused to comment, a column written by Mark Ramprakash for the Daily Telegraph on Tuesday seemed to confirm Butcher's departure.

Ramprakash wrote: "We are experiencing difficult times and the departure of Alan Butcher as coach has left a power vacuum at the top of the club.

"At the moment it is a case of waiting to see who is going to replace Alan and what their vision is for the club."

Surrey's relegation was confirmed when they suffered their second consecutive innings defeat to Nottinghamshire at the Brit Oval last week, leaving them at least 23 points adrift of second bottom side Yorkshire.

Ramprakash also suggested that he might not relish the chance of continuing to play second-division cricket with Surrey.

"I have a year on my contract and I don't really want to finish my career in Division Two," said the former England batsmen.

"I feel pretty good physically and I'm confident I can play for another three years but a lot of things go into the mix - motivation, enjoyment of the game and wanting to be part of something good."

Butcher took over at the Oval in 2006, the last time Surrey were in the second tier of the county game. He won promotion in his first season but battled the drop throughout last year and was unable to turn around his side's fortunes this time out.

A miserable season also saw the Brown Caps finish bottom of their Twenty20 division, second bottom of their Friends Provident Trophy division and fifth in the Pro40 second division.
