ANNE SHELTON GETS BLUE PLAQUE

ANNE SHELTON GETS BLUE PLAQUE

2 October 2008

WARTIME SONGSTRESS Anne Shelton's Blue Plaque will be erected next Monday - the second of the latest winners to be put up this year.

Sir Henry Cooper was the first to get his plaque, when he attended a ceremony at the Thomas A Beckett pub on the Old Kent Road.

Anne Shelton's plaque will be put up at her former home at 142 Court Lane in Dulwich, with the ceremony starting at 10:30am.

The event is going ahead after the current owner of the property, Jeremy Prescott, agreed to the plaque being placed on his home. He has invited members of Anne's family, the Not Forgotten Association, The Royal British Legion and Opera singer Tessa Cahill to attend.

Anne was only fifteen when she secured her first record deal, and was soon so popular with troops the BBC asked her to contribute to 'Calling Malta' and 'Introducing Anne' that were heard across the Mediterranean and north Africa.

Her time spent in the USA was littered with star studded collaborations including performances with both Glen Miller and Bing Crosby. By the time she was 21 she had already had two big hits in the states, and a three month tour across the continent followed, that had to be extended by eight months due to tickets sales.

Although her profile dipped in her later years her popularity never wavered, and in 1979 she topped a poll of whom would sing at a cabaret to commemorate the D-Day landings.

In 1990 she picked up a deserved OBE, with a return to the palace in 1994 seeing her partake in her final concert performance.

She died soon after her that day and she was buried in Benchley Gardens in Nunhead.

Now her memory will be commemorated forever, after the people of Southwark voted her worthy of a plaque following more than 3,000 votes.
