OCTOBER PLENTY AT BOROUGH MARKET

15 October 2008

ON OCTOBER 26, Borough will once again play host to the October Plenty festival.

This is a glorious autumn harvest celebration, mixing ancient seasonal customs and theatre with contemporary festivity. Linking two of London's most olde worlde features, this event begins on Bankside, in the shadow of Shakespeare's Globe, and finishes among the stalls of Borough food market where Apple Day celebrations are taking place.

Attractions include a Corn Queene effigy, the Berry Man, performances of raucous 16th century plays, the Story Orchard - where children can listen to traditional British tales - conker fights, apple bobbing and much more.

A wonderful revival of ancient customs and a great way for Londoners to remember the pleasures of this season, all for free.

The impressive glass and steel pavilion of Fish!, just next to Southwark Cathedral, stands out from the Victorian wrought iron work of borough market.

Where possible they try to use local suppliers from within the markets, to ensure the quality is up to standard. They have an array of fresh seafood, ranging from lobster to classic fish pie and their award winning best beer battered fish. Also back on the menu is mussels served with a choice of sauces.

Open daily from midday to 11pm. It's a great place to eat whilst watching the hustle and bustle of the market.

Next door to the restaurant is their take away shop, serving fish finger butties, a selection of fish and chips, pickled opinions, eggs, wallies and samphire and cold drinks.

Open Tuesday to Saturday.

Stirling Ackroyd have been a prominent feature in the Borough Market area for nearly nine years and have seen the area go from strength to strength.
Due to the popularity of the area it’s not uncommon to see some properties changing hands for in excess of seven figures. But you can also pick up one bedroom apartments and studios for around £350,000.

For those wishing to experience shorter term, the ambience of this historic area, there are many opportunities from around £350/ week.
