THE BERMONDSEY & Rotherhithe Royal British Legion will be holding a special ceremony this Armistice Day, to honour those fallen in recent conflicts.
The war memorial, which has stood on West Lane since 1921, will see a new inscription unveiled by Danny O'Callaghan, whose brother Lee died in Iraq in August 2004.
Members of the Royal British Legion will be joined by Mayor of Southwark Eliza Mann, MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey Simon Hughes, and local councillors at the ceremony on November 11.
The Deputy Mayor of Clichy, Southwark's twin town in France, will be a special guest on the day.
The new inscription will be only the third to adorn the monument, following those placed to honour local soldiers who lost their lives in the two world wars.
The re-dedication of the memorial comes on the 90th anniversary of the signing of the armistice to mark the end of the First World War.
Cyril Herbert, the legion's secretary, served in the Second World War and says the inscription is a fitting tribute to those who have lost their lives since that conflict.
"I think it's the most important thing in the world that we put a message on there for them," he said.
"The memorial means a lot to people here. They keep it clean and the poppies stay on there all year.
"They never had two half-pennies to rub together but they still raised money to honour their dead."
The memorial is currently being renovated in time for the ceremony, with funds supplied by Southwark's cleaner greener safer programme.
