Stansfeld 2 Coney Hall 0
STANSFELD WELCOMED back inspirational defender and skipper Neil Thurgood after a six week absence for this tough encounter against Coney Hall at Oxford Road, writes Dave Marks...
Stansfeld started with lots of confidence after their super win at Cray Valley the week before and were knocking the ball around well in the early stages.
They could not find an opening against a well organised Coney Hall defence until the 25th minute, when a sweeping move on the right between Ben Mulrooney, Harry Draper and George Lowes resulted in the ball being knocked into the box and was swept into the net by Jamie Bowes.
Despite dominating the rest of the half, Stansfeld only managed a few half-chances that were confidently dealt with by the Coney Hall keeper.
In the second half Coney Hall came in search of an equaliser but were denied by the solid central defensive pairing of Sid Mitchell and skipper Neil Thurgood and on the few occasions they breached the pairing; keeper Ricky Ward was ever alert to snuff out any danger. Stansfeld continued the press forward and were unlucky not to add to their lead when a Harvey Gayle effort was deflected into the side netting off a defender’s heel. Stansfeld finally doubled their lead with fifteen minutes to go when substitute Terry Forsyth went on a mazy run through the middle, beating three defenders, before smashing the ball home for his first of the season.
With minutes left Jamie Turner beat two Coney Hall players and then the keeper, only to see his effort cleared off the line. Stansfeld kept going to the end; for a fine victory and a clean sheet.
