PECKHAM LITERARY FESTIVAL

MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17, will see the start of the first annual Peckham Literary Festival.

The week will see six days of free events showcasing the pick of Peckham's literary talents. It's about authors or poets that live in the area and those that have drawn inspiration from it in some way over the centuries. It will feature a variety of readings, lectures, workshops and performances.

Possible highlights of the festival include the book launch of Emma Darwin's new historic novel A Secret Alchemy. The author whose previous works include The Mathematics of Love will be speaking about her new novel which has been described as "a powerful and passionate evocation of glamour and violence in the Wars of the Roses, and the tragic story of the murdered Princes in the Tower."

There will be an open mic poetry evening headlined by The Jazzman (yes that's right The Jazzman) which is for both established and aspiring poets to read their work out loud to an appreciative and likeminded audience.

Friday sees an evening of storytelling with local poet Inua (just the one name, like Prince or Seal) and story teller Sally Pomme- Clayton. Sally's book is entitled Tales Told in Tents and introduces young readers to the Islamic World.

Tibor Fischer, a man once described as "One of our funniest literary critics," will be reading from and signing his new novel Good to be God," on Saturday evening.

Although all the events are free it is worth booking in advance to avoid disappointment on the day.
