SAUSAGE SHOP, FOOTBALLER AND CHARLIE DRAKE ARE NOMINATED FOR BLUE PLAQUE

A SAUSAGE shop, international footballer, controversial campaigner and a cemetery are among the nominees for a Southwark Blue Plaque.

The 2008 list of nominees has been released and nominees will be looking to join the 40 plaques already erected, all of which have been won following a public vote.

Luminaries who have already won include Sir Henry Cooper, Sir Michael Caine and notable landmarks such the Globe Theatre and the site of the historic Tabard Inn in the Borough.

However ancient sites and famous celebrities are not the only previous winners as Manze's Pie and Mash Shop, charity Time and Talents and Borough Market have also secured enough votes in previous years to be awarded the honour.

This year's list is as eclectic as ever and includes the much loved Kennedys Sausages that has recently shut its doors for the final time.It also contains Camberwell born footballer Kenny Samson, who played 86 times for his country and still is in the top ten most capped England players, amongst its numbers.

Elsewhere, activist and campaigner Peter Tatchell is also nominated for his human rights work.

Tatchell is also known locally in Southwark for the bitter by-election campaign he fought with Simon Hughes in 1983, before the latter secured the MP’s seat for North Southwark and Bermondsey.

Less controversial is Nunhead Cemetery, which is one of the great Victorian burial grounds, which has been in operation since 1840.

In total there are 25 nominees with at least one from each community area in the borough. Voting will remain open until March 31 next year, so there is plenty of time to give your opinion.

Between now and March the 'News' will feature all the nominees on its history pages.
