SURREY WARM UP IN ABU DHABI

5 December 2008

TWO OF Surrey's hottest young cricketing prospects came face to face last weekend, thousands of miles from the Brit Oval.

Chris Murtagh and Stuart Meaker are spending the winter honing their skills in the sunnier climes of Australia, playing for rival clubs in the Sydney Grade League.

And when the two Brown Caps tyros came up against each other, it was teenage paceman Meaker who came out on top.

The nineteen-year-old took four wickets as his Fairfield Liverpool side beat Murtagh's Paramatta outfit in a rain-effected match.

Meaker had already claimed one scalp and had another chance dropped by the wicketkeeper when his Surrey team-mate strode out to the middle.

"It was good to get a debut First Grade wicket - but I was still after Murts," said Murtagh, taking up the story on his blog.

"My next over I was bowling at him and after dotting him up on the back foot I decided to slip one fuller to see if he'd do the same as the previous batter. Luckily for me and unfortunately for him he inside edged it straight onto the stumps!"

The 24 year-old batsman had made a solid start but was philosophical about losing out to his young colleague.

"I made 27 and felt good until I managed to inside edge a ball from Meakes onto my stumps," he said.  "He went onto claim four wickets on his first grade game, which was good to see. Just a shame I managed to help him out with that!"

Murtagh went on to take two more wickets in a fine individual display, and was unlucky not claim a 'fivefor' but saw another tricky chance dropped at third man.
