5 December 2008
GUY'S AND ST THOMAS' has been awarded a Certificate of Commitment in its first step towards international recognition from the UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) Baby Friendly Initiative.
The Baby Friendly Initiative works with health professionals to ensure that mothers and babies receive high quality support to enable them to successfully breastfeed.
Zoe Cadderton, breastfeeding co-ordinator for the maternity unit, said: "Breastfeeding gives babies the best start in life and the Baby Friendly Initiative will help us increase breastfeeding rates in the communities we serve.
Breastfeeding gives babies all the nutrients they need for the first six months of life and Guy's and St Thomas' has an informative and supportive
programme for mothers and expectant mothers."
The Trust has one of the best breastfeeding initiation rates in the country - nearly 91 per cent of the women who give birth at the Trust start breastfeeding.
Baby Friendly Initiative Programme Director Sue Ashmore said: "We are delighted that Guy's and St Thomas' has received this award. Surveys show us that most mothers want to breastfeed but don't always have the support they need. Mothers at Guy's and St Thomas' have the satisfaction of knowing that their midwives and health visitors are aiming to provide the highest standard of care."
