GET A BODY MOT

GET A BODY MOT

5 January 2009

EVER WONDERED why your back aches in the morning, or why that ankle you injured playing 5-a-side three years ago still twinges? Well now you can get an answer to these questions and more. esph is a gym run by physios and as part of the induction one of their exercise physios will put you through a head to toe MOT, writes esph managing director Max Sharp...

The MOT screen is designed to pick up potential musculoskeletal problems and to assist in choosing an exercise programme to help you reach your goals. You will have your blood pressure and heart rate checked but the MOT also serves as a tour of your body. If your hamstrings are tight or you have poor core stability then your exercise physio will highlight this in the MOT and focus on some exercises to help improve it. They will tell you a lot more about your physical fitness than you might have known before. Once the fitness programme and goals have been decided you will be given an induction to the gym and all the exercises in your personalised programme are initially done under the guidance of your physiotherapist.

As with any gym, it is essential to attend regularly and stick to the programme from the start if you want to ensure that you meet your goals and do not lose interest. Your gym physio will ensure you get the highest level of support and supervision and is available for a one to one session at any stage, and crucially at no extra cost. They are knowledgeable, friendly and will keep you motivated to reach your goals and get used to that 'feel good' factor that exercise provides.

We all know that the benefits of regular exercise cannot be underestimated but many of us are put off because we might overdo it to start with and injure ourselves. The idea of having a physio on hand at all times to ensure that you're not doing more harm than good does make sense. And if you need more specialised help, esph offer a dietician to help shift those stubborn pounds or to work on a specialist training diet. They also have sports doctors and osteopaths to complement the team.

All in all, a novel and more scientific approach to tackling those New Year resolutions.
