SECOND CALF BORN JUST BEFORE XMAS

7 January 2009

SURREY DOCKS Farm were celebrating yet another new arrival just days before Christmas, as a second calf in two weeks was born to one of their cows.

But this time, Jay, the latest addition to the Surrey Docks family was not welcomed by everyone. New mum Wilma did not want to look after her son, and he is being fed by Willow, who gave birth to her own son Roland just a few days earlier.

"Wilma is just not that interested in being a mother," said farm manager Kath Whittam. "Willow is having to feed both of them for now.

"They look similar and they are the same size, more or less, so there shouldn't be any problems."

Asked to explain why Wilma's motherly instincts failed to kick in, Kath added: "She's the dominant one of the two. She's just a bossy cow - literally!"
