MILLWALL MANAGER Kenny Jackett expressed his frustration that Saturday’s (January 10, 2009) game with Cheltenham Town has been called off, but has immediately turned his attention to Tuesday’s FA Cup trip to Crewe.
The Lions’ League One clash with the Robins was called off following Friday’s midday inspection when a Football League appointed referee said that the frozen Whaddon Road pitch had no chance of recovering in time for Saturday’s 3pm kickoff.
The Lions boss told the ‘News’: “There is nothing we can do about the weather and the game is off.
“I thought there was very little chance of the game going ahead with the conditions still very bad up and down the country. We trained reasonably well on Thursday morning and I had hoped that things were warming up a little but the temperatures are still very low.”
Jackett’s men were making their last pre-game preparations this afternoon at Reading’s training ground when the news filtered through. “We are training at Reading at the moment and it’s minus one now with the forecast making things very difficult,” he said.
The former Swansea boss admitted that though frustrating for everyone, it is important that the right decision is made and as early as possible. He said: “It is important that those who pay their money see a good attacking game of football are not left short.
“When the game becomes a lottery because of the elements, it becomes very difficult.
“The safety of the players is also very important and cannot be risked at this stage of the season.”
The club’s interest will now shift to Tuesday’s important FA Cup Third Round replay at Crewe with the glamour tie at Premiership side Hull City or Newcastle United lying in wait for the winner.
“First off we hope that things thaw out over the weekend,” continued Jackett. “We will hope for a full session on Sunday morning and a decent session on Monday with our focus on Crewe on Tuesday night.
“It is an important game and is our next and hope to get a result to progress.”
* Jackett said that he was no closer to making his first January signing this afternoon but will be back on the phones over the weekend.
“There are no imminent moves looking likely either in or out” he told the ‘News’. “We have been working on some things and the weekend will come now so we will see.”
He added on the speculation over signing promising goal scorer Steve Morison from Stevenage: “It will take a very substantial offer from anybody who is interested to take him. There is nothing close at the moment.”
