COUNCILLOR DAVID Noakes, the executive member for health and adult care at Southwark Council visited the Trust recently to find out about the high quality cancer care provided to patients.
During the visit he heard how Guy's and St Thomas' along with King's College London, King's College Hospital and the South East London Cancer Network have developed a joint vision to deliver a world class clinical service and strong links with the local community.
Councillor Noakes met and talked with doctors, nursing staff and radiographers and was given an overview of the chemotherapy, breast cancer and lung cancer services. He also heard about the Dimbleby Cancer Care Centre, a drop-in centre for cancer patients and their families, the emotional support the Trust provides to people recovering from active cancer treatment, and the recently introduced Macmillan Welfare Benefits Advice project, which offers much-needed advice and information to support them to claim all the financial help available to people living with cancer and their families.
Councillor Noakes said: "Cancer is one of the biggest threats to the local population and I was delighted to find out more about how Guy's and St Thomas' delivers high quality cancer care to local patients. It was great to witness the commitment of staff to provide the kind of excellent care that we would all like for ourselves."
Clinical Director for Oncology and Haematology, Dr Janine Mansi, said: "At Guy's and St Thomas' we are firmly committed to providing the best cancer care possible to local people and we were proud to introduce Councillor Noakes to our dedicated team of staff and to explain how we are implementing our plans to deliver a world class cancer service."
