SPANNER THIEF SENT TO CROWN COURT

6 February 2009

A man who tried to steal four spanners from a shop on Old Kent Road has been held in custody while he awaits sentencing at Inner London Crown Court.

Terrence Tebbutt from Hilltop Gardens in Dartford took the tools, worth £81.96, from Halfords on January 28.
The 39-year-old had initially denied the offence to police, but later pleaded guilty after seeing CCTV footage of him in the shop.

Despite the relatively small value of the stolen tools, DJ Stone said the defendant's eleven previous shoplifting convictions meant he needed to be sent to the crown court for sentencing.

"Magistrates courts are weary of this offending and have had enough," said DJ Stone.
"This offence is hugely aggravated by his previous. It seems he feels he can go wherever he wants and take whatever he wants."
