Rotherhithe residents continued their campaign to prevent the destruction of mature trees this week, staging protests with local primary schoolchildren and parking cars under trees earmarked for felling, writes Chris Mullany...
The work is being carried out on the Downtown site by developers Barratt, who were granted planning permission at the end of last year for a predominantly residential scheme. However, they are yet to submit a revised application, showing how they will meet 44 conditions.
While the developers are in their right to begin the work, angry locals and politicians have called for the felling to be halted until the revised application is considered. However, this week Barratt started to erect hoarding around the site, in an apparent bid to prevent further access by the public.
The developer is currently appealing two previous applications, and told the ‘News’ it would only withdraw these when the deadline for a possible judicial review on the third application had passed.
