JAIL FOR REPEAT OFFENDER

26 February 2009

A man who tried to swallow his stash of cocaine after he was stopped by police near the Elephant and Castle was given a 90 day jail sentence.

Cops stopped Ian Brooks, 43, who lives on Great Guildford Street in the Borough, as he was walking along Newington Causeway last December.

The officers first saw Brooks throw something to the ground, but as they approached he picked it up and put it in his mouth.

Despite this police still managed to get hold of the package, and arrested Brooks for possession of a Class A drug.
After reading though a list of sixteen offences including burglary, theft and possession of Heroine and Cocaine, District Judge Shamoon Somjee said: "The time has come for a custodial sentence. Enough is enough."

Explaining to the court that Brooks had breached previous orders, and repeatedly failed to keep promised appointments, he imposed a prison term on the defendant.
