Talented youngsters from Rotherhithe and Bermondsey have decided to take on a continental challenge for their summer tour this year, following a successful journey to Scotland last season.
The 'News' reported in August last year that Dockland's Junior Football Club were heading north of the border to take on four Scottish premier league junior teams, but this year they have set their sights further afield.
After sending off a variety of letters to top European clubs, Portuguese giants Porto extended an invitation to the boys, who will be setting off later this year for a match against their under nine outfit.
Manager Jamie Mehmet said: "The boys are over the moon, even though a couple of them are nervous about flying as they have never been on a plane before. All our kids come together and some had never kicked a ball before.
"They have improved so much and in our second season we are currently top of the league. Now we will be playing a side hand picked from all over Portugal."
Last year’s trip to Scotland was organised with the help of Jamie's brother Billy, who plies his trade with St Mirren, and was massively successful.
To make this trip affordable for all the team's parents the club have already raised money, and had help from some generous benefactors towards air fares and hotel costs.
Jamie added: "We just want to give these kids memories that they will never forget. They have come together well and are really good friends on and off the pitch. Now they will play against a fantastic team and it is great for them."
