In response to Val Shawcross' letter, 'Cutting the times for pedestrians to cross, 23 April', I would like to clarify that the numbers that she has commented on are pan-London, from signal timing reviews that took place in 15 boroughs.
Therefore she is mistaken to state that 41 pedestrian crossings in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Wandsworth would see reduced green time as a result of reviews.
In fact, among the 58 timing reviews that were completed in these four boroughs there were only 13 cases where the average hourly green man time has been reduced, compared with 13 where it has been increased. At the remaining 32 there have been no changes to the green man times.
At no time will changes to traffic signal timings impact on the safety of pedestrians. Pedestrians will always be provided with a safe crossing period, based on DfT guidance.
TfL undertakes these reviews to make junctions work a little better for everyone; it is not about favouring motorists over other forms of transport.
