WHY TWELVE DAYS FOR THREE DAY JOBS?

15 May 2009

I sent an email to Southwark Environment on Saturday, April 18, informing them that on Wednesday two workmen from CONWAY had put barriers around the cul-de-sac opposite my house.

The notice on the barrier stated No Parking for three days. On Thursday there were no workmen but a lorry brought some paving stones. Friday and Saturday again no workmen. According to the notice the work should have been completed by now but it hadn't even started.

Normally four or five residents would park in this area. Parking is a problem for residents in Beatrice Road as it is the 'car park' for people working or shopping in the Blue.

I had a response from the Environment Services that my enquiry had been forwarded to Highways Maintenance for further investigation and the site would be inspected in the next 10 days! I sent another email on the 24th reporting that since the 16th the two workmen had only been on the site for two days. I attached a photo of the site. I had a response from the Environment Services that the Highways Maintenance Team advised that the work was on going and not abandoned. The Officer who closed the job was asked to contact me but never did.

On May 1 I emailed Environment Services again to tell them that barriers had finally gone and all that was left was a
No Parking sign attached to a lampost. A job that was supposed to take 3 working days had taken 12 days.

It would appear that the Highways Maintenance Team were totally unaware of what was going on.
Perhaps this is why there are so many road works in Southwark that do not appear to have anyone working on them.

Dave Morrison, Beatrice Road, Bermondsey.
