An away day at League One new boys Southampton is the exciting opening fixture for Millwall this year, after the 2009/10 league fixtures were published yesterday.
The trip will bring back some mixed emotions for some players and fans however, as the Lions’ relegation to League One was finalised at St Mary's three years ago.
In the first month of the year Millwall will take on two other teams based on the coast, as they travel to Southend on Saturday, August 22, and entertain AFC Bournemouth in the first round of the Carling Cup, just three days after taking on Southampton.
Speaking to www.millwallfc.co.uk skipper Paul Robinson said: "Brilliant. What a great game for us. They have got a lovely ground, and I am really looking forward to starting the season there."
December looks set to be the toughest month of the year, with MK Dons set to visit The Den and challenging trips to both Charlton and Norwich in and around Christmas Day.
The New Year should also prove to be a testing period, with a January 2 fixture at home to Southend, followed by
fixtures away at Carlisle and then at home against the Saints.
The run in looks reasonable, should vital points need to be picked up, with Leyton Orient making the short trip across the capital on April 24, before a trip to Merseyside to take on Tranmere and then completing their fixtures at
home to Swindon on May 8.
The club skipper added: "Now that we know who we are playing on August 8, this will really focus our minds during pre-season. The hard work has to start from day one when we report back, so that we are up and running for the new season."
