7 September 2009

The plans for the renovated Camberwell Baths will be on show at an open day at the nearby library on September 12.

A four year campaign by locals to renovate the Victorian building succeeded in April this year, when £1.45million was secured from the Government Free Swimming Capital Modernisation Fund.

Southwark Council supplemented the grant by putting up £1.5million, which meant much needed work could proceed.

The plans to redevelop the building were approved on August 21, and work has now commenced.

The project team looking after the redevelopment will be on hand to answer any questions, as well as the council’s Executive Member for Culture, Leisure and Sport, Lewis Robinson.

He said: "I am delighted planning approval for the proposals to refurbish Camberwell Baths has been granted, and thank you to all those residents who wrote in support of the application.”

He added: “This is a key milestone in restoring this wonderful Victorian building and works have now started on site."
The plans will be on show from 10am to 12 noon on the day.

The fully renovated Camberwell Baths look set to be reopened in 2010.
