FOXES 'CAUGHT TO FIGHT DOGS'

10 September 2009

Rotherhithe Residents believe that wild foxes are being hunted and caught by groups of men seen in the area, who then set packs of fighting dogs on them, to rip them to pieces.

Three domestic cats have also been found mauled almost beyond recognition - apparently by the same animals.
Cat and dog owners in the area are now being warned to keep an eye out for anything unusual and to take extra care with their pets.

While it is not currently confirmed what happens to the ecology park's foxes when they are caught, Steve Cornish from the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland thinks it is obvious.

"It's just baiting and then they'll throw them to a pack of dogs. I think it's groups from outside the area coming in."

Steve also urged residents who have missing cats to get in touch via the Friends of Russia Dock Woodland website with a description of the cat so that it can be matched up to the bodies found.

Steve said: "I would advise cat owners to consider keeping their pets inside at night for the moment."
