Parents could save £1,000 on every child they raise by using modern reusable nappies.

Ditching the disposable diapers could also help the environment, as they make up around two per cent of all Southwark's household waste.

Cristina Barros, local nappy advisor and mum of four, said: "Modern real nappies are really easy to use and long lasting.  You can use them for all of your children and still pass them on to friends or family to use again."

She added: "If babies had a voice, they would choose cloth!"

Anyone interested in learning about these nappies can attend a free event at the Kintore Way Children's Centre on Grange Road, Bermondsey, on Tuesday at 10am.

The event is being run by Southwark Council and Veolia Environmental Services.
