MAKING SCENTS OUT OF IT

Photos, videos and the outfit you meticulously picked for your big day all serve to remind you how wonderful it all was - yet it is well known that your sense of smell is the one sensation that most powerfully evokes memories of the past.
How can you choose a fragrance that will be the one that will sum up your big day - a smell that you can bottle and keep, to evoke all that was special on your wedding day?
The answer is the unique work of Alison Sam. It is the only company that currently offers a bespoke service of room fragrances designed to provoke nostalgia.
The basic principle is for the fragrance to evaporate into the air through the stems of the rattan reeds, thus creating a lingering scent throughout your room or open space.
And the smells can be as varied and as strange as you like. Alison, who mixes the essential and fragrance oils herself, told the 'Weekender' that the most liked smells are a mix of orange, lemon and grapefruit, as well as sandalwood and a lavender and black pepper mix.
But as our sense of smells all differ, it is really up to the customer to decide: "Some people like an earthy or woody smell, others a floral or spicy smell," she said. "The one advice I would recommend for a wedding is to keep an overall smell in one room, especially if you are in a large hall.
You can choose a different fragrance for other closed off areas like the bathroom."
Alison hails from and now lives back in Nunhead, but came up with the idea after travelling extensively and is constantly being inspired by different frequencies even now at markets and in parks and woodlands.
In her time she has been asked to come up with some unusual smells, including the zany idea of one customer who wanted a cigarette fragrance for a men’s clothes shop in Greenwich, to evoke a feeling of an old gentleman’s club. The shop did not survive the recession.
However, her work is being used by hotels, spas and interior designers, including a top Conran hotel. Alison’s standard room fragrances start from £25. Private Blends start from £35. Glass blown designer bottles start from £70.
The selective bottles are created by world renowned glass blowers from 'London Glassblowing' on Bermondsey Street and could be commissioned to fit in with the overall theme of your wedding.
At the South London Gay Wedding Fair Alison Sam will be offering free samples of her products, plus a free verbal consultation to help couples decide what fragrance sums up themselves and their day.

I was introduced to Alison Sam fragrances through a friend of mine who had discovered Alison Sam's fragrances at a London private members club. After being passed her number I had a meeting with her and was amazed at her personal fragrance blending. What i really liked was that I could choose "my own personalised" fragrance rather than having to choose between fragrances at retail shops that were not quite right for me and my home. A truly professional and great service and my home smells fantastic, thanks v. much.
