You are here: Southwark \ NEW ART FROM NUNHEAD
31 March 2010
They came from Italy, they came from the Isle of Wight, they came from Bickley and from all points Southwark.
They arrived by plane, train, automobile, on foot and motorised wheelchair. They came with umbrellas as this was Nunhead and it was raining.
We had all come to see the opening ceremony of Randy Klein's new artwork for the Nunhead Station entrance and the weather did not deter.
After almost 4 years of work combined with bureaucratic stress the project had finally came to a conclusion, and even this week when the piece was at last being put into place the problems that have dogged the mission from its outset persisted.
First, the foundations were not level and had to be realigned; then the electrics took out the power of Nunhead Station, and to top it off the station had to be closed while the structure was eventually erected, making many commuters both late and annoyed.
But all was smiles and joy when the ribbon was cut and speeches were made and the lights were switched on. It made everything that had happened over the last few years worthwhile.
