Three more independent candidates have entered the running for the fast-approaching council elections on May 6.
The local activists from Surrey Docks and Rotherhithe bring the total number of declared independents to five in the borough.
For the last four years the Lib Dems and Conservatives have run a coalition council - ensuring a majority over Labour councillors. But if all the declared independents are elected they could rival the Conservatives as possible kingmakers in any coalition between parties after the election.
The candidates standing in Rotherhithe are Kathy Hennessy and Jerry Hewitt, while John Hellings is standing in Surrey Docks. Issuing a joint statement, the threesome said: "We all know each other and our local communities very well, and we have worked together successfully on a number of different local groups including tenants' and residents' associations, Canada Water Consultative Forum, and the Downtown Defence Campaign, as well as each of us having our own special interests and skills sets."
They said: "We think it is time for the voice of ordinary people to have someone they can put their trust in on election day, who will genuinely represent them, not a political party, to secure good standard housing for all, and a decent environment in which to live, affordable and relevant leisure facilities for local people, and no more greedy developments and surrender of green or open spaces, without major infrastructure investments, anti-pollution measures, a decent transport system, as well as good housing.
“We are putting ourselves forward to give people that genuine choice on election day - they can now elect local people from amongst themselves, who will work exclusively for them - not a big political machine.
"People can be confident we will be right there in the heart of our community in Rotherhithe and Surrey Docks, serving them, not a political master, and struggling to get things right for the benefit of local people, not someone's political career in Parliament."
‘News’ disability columnist and activist Patrick Horan is also standing as an independent in Rotherhithe, while Richard Rees is standing in Newington ward.
The deadline for nominations for council candidates is Thursday at noon.

Not all political parties are the same. The Camberwell Party is a local party committed to local issues and fully focused on serving the people of Camberwell. We're not answerable to any political masters in Westminster, and for us there are no more rungs on the political ladder.
