NATIONAL ELECTIONS 2010

29 April 2010

Southwark's three long-standing MPs are confident they can all retake their seats at the general elections on Thursday.

Together they have spent more than seventy years in parliament, sitting in what have become some of the safest seats in London.

But despite the lack of prospects for change, surprises do happen. After the general election in 2005, Labour deputy leader Harriet Harman, in Camberwell and Peckham, had a majority of more than 13,000 - one of the biggest in the country.

This year Ms Harman faces another new candidate in former Mayor of Southwark Columba Blango, from the only serious contenders to the throne, the Lib Dems.
Mr Blango claims to be the first black candidate for the constituency, but even with this and a bounce in the polls following Nick Clegg's performance at the first leaders' debate, he faces an uphill challenge.

Simon Hughes, in the newly named and slightly smaller Bermondsey and Old Southwark, is aiming to build on his 5,000 seat majority and reap the rewards of a massive spike in the support for the Lib Dems nationally.

The latest national poll of polls puts the Lib Dems second on 30 per cent behind the Tories - leaving Labour last.

Mr Hughes has been the MP for the north of the borough since taking a landslide win at a by-election in 1983. Previously it had been a Labour stronghold.

Back in 2010, Mr Hughes faces a fight from Labour's London Assembly member Val Shawcross, who could make inroads into Mr Hughes' lead after he suffered a 9 per cent drop in support at the last elections.

Venturing further south, Olympics minister Tessa Jowell in Dulwich and West Norwood has held her seat since 1992, when she ousted the Conservatives and built herself a safe Labour seat.

Up against Ms Jowell in the 2005 election, Lib Dem candidate and Southwark councillor Jonathan Mitchell increased his party's vote by around 9 per cent, and could build on that this time around.

I agree we should vote Independent and forget the lackeys put up by the parties. The bookies have shortened the odds on Patricia Knox in Camberwell and Peckham from 125/1 to 25/1 and Labrokes won't let you bet more than £25 on her. It's easy to see why they're nervous if you read what she stands for on her website. Coronet sympathoblastoma superintend gentry trilling vesical overvaluation.
