JASON ROY CARVES OUT TON FOR SURREY

Nineteen-year-old Jason Roy became the first batsman to reach a ton for Surrey in a t20 match in the eight years the shorter format has been played.

The former Whitgift school cricketer in his last game, against Hampshire, showed glimpses of his raw talent with an audacious six before making way shortly after.

On this occasion those glimpses turned shone through as he made an unbeaten 101 against Kent, a team they had only just played at the beginning of the previous week.

The Lions won the toss choosing to bat first and Roy was at the crease by the third over, as captain Rory Hamilton-Brown was caught having supplied only six runs to the Surrey cause.

Steven Davies and Roy formed a solid partnership with 42 runs off 28 balls and Surrey were looking even better when Andrew Symonds, whose nickname at the club is ironically 'Roy' came in to bat alongside the teenager. The two Roys managed a stand of 63 from five overs and Surrey finished on a commanding 201-4.

Two early wickets for Chris Tremlett gave the Lions some breathing space and Kent at the close of play finished 44 runs behind, losing eight wickets in the process.

Next up, the team travelled to Chelmsford for their second t20 game of the week, this time pitting their wits against Essex.

This nail biter went right down to the wire, but Surrey were very unfortunate to end on the losing side after Davies reached his highest score in the tournament so far with 89 runs. Essex's Scott Styris however proved to be the deciding factor in the final result.

With his side needing 22 runs from their last six balls, Styris hit two sixes, two fours and a double winning the match leaving one ball to spare. Surrey's bowler for the dramatic final over was the unfortunate Symonds, who ended with figures of 45 runs from his 17 balls.

Having been left shell shocked by the last gasp defeat, Surrey have had to pick themselves up as their test side are currently in Chesterfield, midway through their four day match against Derbyshire, which we will report on in next weeks issue.
