In life, nothing is a sure bet…Matt is about to gamble on the biggest prize of the year: his love life. There are two runners: Paige, the favourite, and rank outsider Helen. Who will he bet on and who will win?
Worth A Flutter is written by Michael Horspool and shows that life is not just a chick-flick with a chivalrous knight on hand to save the fair maiden. Sometimes love is a non-runner…
Horspool has set his play in Bermondsey and his main character has his roots set firmly there, and having been brought up there he knows the people and area well. “My Great Nan ran her own stall at Caledonian Market till the age of 78,’ he tells me with no small amount of pride, ‘and my Granddad, Micky Head, ran a pub and the Silwood Boxing Club in the area.’
Even so, Michael eschewed the pugilism and studied musical theatre at LSMT, by the Elephant, but being thought of as in the ‘Ray Winstone mould’ by his peers made it difficult to get parts in that genre, or taken seriously for straight acting roles.
‘I decided the best way was to start writing my own plays,’ he says. ‘And being raised how I was, my stories and life experience are slightly different, giving my work a different feel and edge.’ This rom-com for the stage runs for two nights only.
