21 April 2011
Former Labour councillor John Friary appeared in court on Tuesday charged with grooming a child for sex.
The 51-year-old, who was the Cabinet member for community safety until his arrest by the Met’s paedophile squad in January, faced the court at West London Magistrates accused of attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming.
No plea was given at the preliminary hearing, and the court set a date to commit the case to the crown court.
Friary was granted bail, with the condition that he does not use any social networking sites.
The long time councillor for the Camberwell Green and Brunswick Park wards is originally from Edinburgh in Scotland, but is currently listed as living in Camberwell Road.
He has previously held various positions of authority, including being a governor at a Camberwell primary school and worked as a health and safety officer at London Metropolitan University.
He is due to return to West London Magistrates Court on May 31.
