ART WITH A PULSE

The kinesis of studio production is transposed to the gallery space, in ‘Pulsed’, a multi-disciplinary group show, bringing together six UK based artists: Ross Chisholm, Paul Housley, Simon Keenleyside, Jess MacNeil, Michael Samuels and Matthew Sawyer.

Raw materials such as figurines, furniture, portraits and landscapes are re-presented and estranged in the process. The familiar becomes alien. At times playful, violent and meandering, the works in the show interweave to create a visual fabric where histories, memories and meanings conflate, to render the possibility of a fixed narrative impossible.

Ross Chisholm’s practice is characterized by an exploration into the process and temporality of painting, through a reconfiguration of the medium’s conventions, and the creation of composite worlds, where time, place and memory collapse.

Paul Housley’s practice is devoted to the process and materiality of painting. His subject matter includes portraits and still lifes, which frequently blur genres, and are more concerned with the physicality of the medium than the fixity of the subject.

Alternatively, Simon Keenleyside’s work deals with issues of personal memory through the abstraction of landscapes familiar to him since childhood.

Jess MacNeil works at the points of intersection between painting, installation, video and photography, often taking as her subject matter the dynamics of the human/environment rela-tionship.

Michael Samuels’ practice can be described as a form of contemporary bricolage, which utilises industrially
produced Modernist furniture and light.

Mathew Sawyer creates objects, actions and events that are both troublingly personal and un-settlingly familiar. Sawyer’s actions veer between the private and the public, using nominal gestures to create moments of great affect.
