30 April 2012
A metal thief who tried to steal copper from the roof of a primary school in Dulwich was fined £2,000 and given 100 hours of community service.
Kaine King, 22, triggered an alarm as he started prizing the valuable metal from the building on January 13.
The school, Dulwich Village Church of England Primary, had already been targeted once before.
Cost of the damage to the building was estimated at £5,800. King admitted the charge of attempted theft by finding on April 18.
He claimed that he had gone out to steal the metal because he had run out of the allowance he was left by his grandparents, who had gone on holiday.
King, of Sandringham Drive in Welling, was spared jail and given a twelve month community order as well as the fine and community service penalty.
The chair of the magistrate panel, Ms Robson, said: “Mr King this is a very serious crime that you have committed and you are lucky that we are not sending you to prison today, extremely lucky.”
