Those of us of a certain ilk will have only eaten crisps, nuts and of course the pork scratching when snacking in a boozer.

Having been to the The Draft House on Tower Bridge before I knew it served good grub, had a mind boggling array of beers but something else attracted me to Lordship Lane – the foot long pork scratching.

No matter how I tried to persuade her, the missus wouldn't have one. She claimed the last time she put something a foot long in her mouth she was forced into a radical career change.

But I can tell you all about it because I have tasted them before. They are great, nice and crisp and chewy, you know it’s bad for you but you want more.

Having had one of the quirkiest dishes at The Dulwich Draft House before my visit this week we opted for a couple of their other left field starters. The Meat Bomb and special Scotch Egg.

The Scotch Egg I believed would help me fulfil an ambition to become the legendary Viz character Johnny Fartpants. I had the name, I was eating an egg dish with curry mayonnaise but was foiled at the final hurdle as the bar staff refused my request for a pint of cabbage water.

As so often in a eatery the starter menu is where you often see the best experimentation and that was the case in The Draft House. The Meat Bomb is a decadent delight, bolognese encased in melted cheese and wrapped in fried breadcrumbs – simply indulgent but thankfully you are given four, as many more would see you stretchered out to King's.

The Scotch Egg was also pleasing, although it was blown away by its combustible companion, with the curry edge being creamy and mild to compliment the slight dryness of a perfectly soft boiled egg surrounds.

The signature dishes of The Draft House are the “Flat Iron” steaks and the burgers. Whenever I am offered a yolk, smoke or poke I will always go for the latter and this burger was a monster in chilli kicking taste and size.

No room for salad in this boy, it was placed to one side, instead two giant onion rings sit atop the slab of meat. I enjoyed it a lot, and felt full the rest of the day, but paying £10 for it I would expect it to be so.

The perfect chips were served in enamel cups which was a nice touch and brought back nostalgic memories of camping with the cubs. Not the time Heather Johnson kicked me in the ging gang goolies for lifting up her short brownie skirt I hasten to add.

The macaroni cheese was melt in the mouth richness with the mushroom holding its own to provide a nice flavour twist. The portion too much for the pea size stomach of the Mrs who felt an accompaniment and half the portion size would be a better option.

You can't mention The Draft House without talking about the booze and I loved the pale ale and cider I had on the scorchingly sunny day, tasty and thirst quenching. Tough competition on Lordship Lane for this new boy but worth a try.
