A recovering drug addict who stole £165 of make-up from a supermarket to 'pay her rent' was bailed until she is sentenced.
Charlotte Prete, 26, aroused security guards' suspicions as soon as she walked into Tesco carrying a large empty rucksack. She was then seen to fill a basket with cosmetics on July 4 and to transfer them to the rucksack.
Security staff at the Dunton Road Tesco in Bermondsey then stopped her as she tried to leave. Prete's defending solicitor, Miss Cooper, suggested that she had stolen the goods so that she could sell them and raise money to pay her rent. But the magistrates pointed out that she had found enough money to buy cocaine, which was found in her system when she was arrested.
Prete pleaded guilty to a charge of theft at the start of the hearing at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court last Thursday. A pre-sentence report was then ordered to provide more information.
Prete, of Alscot Way in Bermondsey, was granted conditional bail until her next appearance, with a curfew from 9pm until 7am, which will be electronically monitored with a tag.
