IT'S TIME TO SHINE!

IT'S TIME TO SHINE!

16 August 2007

The Southwark Community Games (SCG) Summer of Sport 2007 programme steps up a whole new level next week with four days of competitions in Rugby, Athletics, Cricket and Football.

Over the last three weeks the ten strong team of Community Sports Coaches along with their army of casual Coaches, all of whom are Southwark residents, have been at 32 venues across the whole borough delivering 42 sessions every week coaching young people from the ages of 8 to sixteen.

In the first two weeks of the programme alone the Southwark Community Games Sports Coaches collectively engaged over one thousand young people in sport and physical activity. Next week sees the accumulation of these coaching sessions where the young people have the opportunity to show off their newly learnt skills in a competitive arena against their peers from other Community Council areas.

Rugby gameDuane Riley one of the newly recruited SCG Casual Coaches poignantly highlighted the success and growth that the Southwark Community Games has seen over the previous year in regards to assisting local people gain employment and skills.

He said "A year ago I was walking through Peckham Rye Park on a Tuesday afternoon and I saw this clash of coloured T-shirts, screams of excitement and cheering from across the park. I went over and spoke to one of the SCG Sport Coaches and found out it was the Summer of Sport 2006 Cricket Final, I asked one as to how I could get involved there and then. A year on through Southwark Community Games I have gained qualifications, been put on sport specific coaching courses and now help run coaching sessions with young people in my local neighbourhood, I absolutely love it".
