The Dispersal Zone on Bermondsey’s Four Squares Estate was always going to be controversial.
It cannot please everyone - there are thousands of people who live on the estate, and it deals with an age old problem – is there enough to keep kids occupied?
Some residents are saying the kids are intimidating and behave antisocially, while others, including the kids themselves, say they don’t see that there is any problem.
There can be no quick fix available precisely because of this – residents do not agree there is a problem, so how can they agree what to do about it?
The youngsters who regularly hang around the estate in crowds say they are being victimised, and that there is nothing for them to do. But it’s probably fair to say that there could be five youth halls in the area and kids would complain of being bored.
Perhaps if they feel they are being treated unfairly they should take the initiative and show how responsible they can be?
Of course kids will be kids. We are not saying that they should behave like angels. But there are some things they can do to prove they are not a problem and that they are just hanging around with their friends.
It’s common knowledge that youngsters in hoodies are intimidating to some. Whether they mean to be or not, it is a fact of life in modern Britain. So maybe the youngsters can just wear their hoods down? If they are aware that as they are in a gang they could be seen as intimidating by elderly people or any other residents, maybe they could relax their stance and say ‘hello’?
Or perhaps they could go out of their way to prove how nice they can be? Do some errands for their elderly neighbours?
Many readers may laugh out loud at such a suggestion, but it is not so naïve. It does not take much to be nice. If the youngsters really want to prove themselves, maybe they can make the effort and make the estate a nice place to live in.

Very logic and reasonable observations! Yes, if they take the initiative to launch any kind of project, surely the council and the tenants associations and other agencies will help them to realize the project. They just have to come up with the idea and show commitment to carry it on.
