Panto season is well and truly upon us.

It's always been the best way to keep the kids entertained but this year, Southwark theatres have pulled out all the stops to make sure families can have fun together, writes Helen Brooks...

Maybe it is 'behind you!' but that won't stop you enjoying every minute of these productions. As well as all the old favourites, there are some thoroughly modern twists to keep kids and adults alike on their toes.

London Bubble Theatre Company
The Tinderbox 
5th December 2007 – 5th January 2008

A show that promises to spark the imagination and tickle the ribs of both children and adults.

The Old Vic
Cinderella 
4th December – 20th January 2008

The fairytale story of rags to riches comes to The Old Vic this Christmas. Stephen Fry's remake is all Vaudeville and verve. No sooner said than done with the kind of starry cast you've come to expect from the famous theatre. It's just the sort of heartfelt story you'll find yourself loving. Keep hold of the hankies! There's laughter and tears just around the corner. Your evening will be transformed with one wave of the Vic's magic wand.

Unicorn Theatre
Duck!  
Friday 30th November - Sunday 27th January 2008

Don't want to hang with the popular kids? Then 'Duck' is the panto for you. It's ugly duckling come good but with a twist. You'll never see Hampstead Heath in the same way. But is the fairytale coming true? He might be loveable but Duck's not living up to his name: he doesn't look like a mallard and he certainly isn't acting like one. You'll be hooked on this wild adventure story. It's perfect for anyone who wants to stand out from the crowd.

The Churchill – Bromley

Low cost flights now available… to Neverland! The Churchill's annual production is the great escape for anyone suffering from the winter blues. Classic Hollywood cast and TV favourites come together – it's a traditional panto plot, but with some super-modern special effects. The ticking crocodile will have you marvelling for days to come. Film and television legend Paul Michael Glaser (Starsky and Hutch) will shed his good guy image to star as dastardly pirate leader Captain Hook.

Greenwich
Dick Whittington
Tuesday 4th December – Saturday 5th January

It's on every Londoner's mind: who's next for mayor? But this time it's neither Boris nor Ken – It's got to be Dick (Whittington that is.) Dame Andrew Pollard leads this production of big ideas in a rather small cheese shop. Watch out for your daughters or the pirates might just carry them off! Greenwich theatre is riding high off the back of last winter's panto success, so there's high expectations all round for this year's acclaimed production.

Catford Broadway Theatre
Aladdin 
Saturday 15th December 2007 – Sunday 6th January 2008

Catford are really getting the kids involved this Christmas: budding actors come from the Cooper school of theatre and dance. They'll be alongside big names from TV and pop. It's a fair cop! Look out for Mark Wingett, known to millions as DC Carver from The Bill who'll be starring as panto baddy Abanazer. Full of eastern promise; follow Aladdin as he tries his luck with the lovely Princess Jasmine. Let's hope he doesn't rub that genie up the wrong way! 

Peckham Theatre
Mr Plug the Plumber

The best plumber in Town!!!!!!

Peckham's panto is perfect for younger kids, but parents will find themselves laughing along too with Mr. Plug's adventures.

Croydon Fairfield Halls
Dick Whittington 
Friday 7th December – Sunday 6th January

Fairfield have stuck to the traditional formula with their take on the story of one boy and his dreams of fame and fortune. It's all singing, all dancing, with TV's finest taking all the lead roles. Not only that but you can watch with awe at the ultra violet under water set – not your standard panto fair. Can Dick turn around his luck and rise from zero to hero, defeat King Rat, win the hand of his true love and fulfil his dream of becoming Lord Mayor of London? It seems like a big ask, but Fairfield Halls have the answers…
