Stansfeld 1-1 Samuel Montegue
In the first half of this local derby Stanfeld was a team with a mission - after Danny Steele’s harsh words in the ‘News’ last week.
For the first 45 minutes the team showed signs that this could have been their most accomplished performance of the season.
Tackles were flying and the commitment was good.
A peach of a free kick from the half way line from Daniel Davis glided in to the box for Downes, the Stanfeld centre back, who has come out of retirement to help out in the injury crisis. Downes lost his marker, and rose like a salmon to head it in from close range.
In the second half the team seemed to run out of steam for the third game in a row and Samuel Montegue started to take control in the mud bath middle of the pitch.
With twenty minutes into the second half gone, Samuel Montegue drew level and kept attacking until ten minutes from the end, when a sharp counter attack led to Jamie Turner being fouled in the box. The Samuel Montegue player was given the red card.
Turner ran up to take the penalty, striking it low and to the right, with the keeper at full stretch to pull off the save.
In the 90th minute a sending off for Turner rubbed salt into the wound.
After the game manager Steele said his team was lacking the fitness required for 90 minutes and that his defence seemed to have lost concentration in latter weeks.
He also said that Harvey Gayle has stated he is staying at Stanfeld, despite the interest of two divisions above Greenwich Borough.
