SAFER SCHOOLS PROGRAMME

26 March 2008

“Southwark Police have a close working relationship with secondary schools in Southwark and we are committed to
making sure every pupil can attend school safely. As such, we have dedicated Safer School Officers working throughout the borough.”

Superintendent Victor Olisa
Head of Police Partnership

The Safer Schools team aim to be at the heart of the school community.
This is achieved by

  • Regular reassurance patrols at the school gate and in the designated Safeguarding Youth Zones after school hours.
  • Investigating youth crime issues involving pupils
  • Supporting young victims of crime at times when they are most vulnerable
  • Delivering occasional citizenship messages in the classroom or school assemblies
  • Engaging with the pupils and staff, building relationships and working together to make their schools and community safer.

TRUANCY PATROLS

Officers from the Southwark Safer Schools team working in partnership with Southwark council wardens and educational welfare officers, carried out  truancy patrols last month, to engage with young people on the borough and find out why they were not attending school.

The patrols were carried out on Monday 25, Wednesday 27 and Friday 29 February between normal school hours across areas identified as truancy hotspots, including the Elephant and Castle, Surrey Quays, Walworth Road, Peckham High Street, Peckham Rye and Camberwell.

The aim of the initiative was to identify causes of truancy and tackle the problem, whilst re-enforcing the message to parents that children must attend school regularly. Educational welfare officers will also be able to use the information gained to make sure any support or investigation required in individual cases can be offered.

VOLUNTEER POLICE CADETS

The cadet unit meets every Tuesday evening at Walworth Academy School starting at 6.45pm.

The aims are:

  • To encourage active citizenship by cadets in the local community
  • Enhance the relationship between police and young people across the borough
  • To support cadets with their own personal development and career aspirations
  • To encourage cadets to lead a healthy life style
  • To volunteer to be part of a uniformed group supporting police crime reduction activities
  • To learn new skills, have fun and make new friends

"The Volunteer Police Cadets remain very much part of the wider police family in Southwark. We would encourage any young people aged between 14 and 19 who either live or go to school or college in Southwark to consider joining us. Cadets meet once a week for training and give up their free time to help support a wide range of community events across Southwark and in Central London. We also ensure there is an opportunity to gain vocational qualifications in first aid and schemes such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. We also occasionally do outward bound activities across the country. If you have an interest in policing and want to make a positive contribution to your community this may be the perfect activity for you."

"Safeguarding young people in Southwark is our number one priority, and the Safer Schools Team is at the forefront of helping us to deliver on this priority. The Safer School Officers work daily in their dedicated schools in partnership with pupils, staff, parents and a variety of other agencies to give all young people the very best opportunity to achieve the five key outcomes of the Every Child Matters Agenda: Staying Safe, Making a Positive Contribution, Enjoying and Achieving, Being Healthy and Achieving Economic Wellbeing."

Crime Prevention Advice in schools

  • We recommend that pupils do not bring valuables to school but if they use a bicycle or carry a mobile phone you can register each free of charge at  www.immobilise.com
  • Our school beat officers are experienced at dealing with and talking to young people. We urge pupils to come forward and talk to the Safer School Officer with any issues or concerns they might be facing.
