THROUGHOUT SEPTEMBER, the British Film Institute will be celebrating its 75th birthday with a month of classic films and eye popping art displays, writes Julia Shipperley...
In a manner fitting a celebration of the length of time the BFI has served its monolith cultural role, the proceedings have a distinct focus on the concept of Time itself.
It also features extended runs of Powell and Pressburger classic A Matter of Life and Death, Terrence Malick's Badlands (pictured) and Eric Rohmer's latest, The Romance of Astrea and Celadon.
The paintings of French actress Juliette Binoche will be on display along with a tribute season of her films and an on stage Guardian Interview.
The Oscar winning directors of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, French duo Pierre Bismuth and Michel Gondry have also contributed a video installation, The All seeing Eye.
The birthday party itself kicks off on Thursday, September 25 with a gala event celebrating the BFI story with contributions from special guests. Back to the Future the next day sees the BFI teaming with the AV Social to present an evening of electronic music and live visuals that will hint at the future possibilities of cinema.
On Saturday The Big Chill festival collaborates with the BFI to present live performances using archive film and live music in keeping with the themes of memory and time. Featured artists include The Light Surgeons, D-Fuse, Exceeda, Future Loop Foundation and VJ Anyone.
The family fun day is on September 28 where families can join the slapstick Charlie Chaplin workshop to practice the funny walk and have it filmed or make a Charlie Chaplin badge to take away.
To celebrate the anniversary you can download a selection of 75 short films for just 75p each throughout the whole of September including the early works of renowned directors such as Lindsay Anderson, Gurinder Chadha and Peter Greenaway.
