FOLLOWING THE success of First Shorts in 2007, the University of Greenwich is presenting four packed evenings of new works by talented creative & media writing students, in association with drama students and experienced theatre directors. The programme includes an evening of poetry, four performed readings of new plays and full productions of short plays and monologues.
Poetry Readings - Wednesday 16 April 2008 at 7.30pm
Nine poets perform fresh, exciting poems from this year's cohort. They present a wide range of material which plays with form, using and abusing rhyme to voice the new.
Performed Play Readings - Thursday 17 April 2008 at 7.30pm
High Noon by Jennifer Hayward, directed by James Palm
In High Noon, a passionate satire, Loxley Hall is a utopia for women desperate for revenge. Watch out for those who have evolved from stricken victims to something far more dangerous. Lucy's pleas for justice ten years ago after a vicious attack had no effect. The Hall wants her to have it now and to give as much punishment as she sees fit. But is her judgement sound?
The Silence Of Sleep by James Hook, directed by Steve Harper
In Hook's surreal play a man is so unfulfilled with the daily grind of his life, and plagued by a wild imagination, that he begins to lose a sense of what is real and imagined. So entranced is he by his dreams, he falls in love with sleep. Finally caught up in insomnia however, he is faced with the realities he's been trying to avoid.
Performed Play Readings - Friday 18 April 2008 at 7.30pm
Mound by Susan Hallissey, directed by Michele Frankel
In Mound, a poetic drama, Edith is a woman on a mission. She digs. She digs anywhere - for peace, for the truth. Danny is a young man who is never far away until Edith is finally committed to a secure mental health unit and the devastating events of the past are unearthed.
Virtuality by Liam Smyth, directed by George Perrin
In Virtuality, a dark comedy, Gary is a bored telemarketer who, tired of the rat race, persuades his partner Sarah to support him whilst he writes what he hopes will be a bestseller. But Gary gets distracted by an internet world of sex and entertainment and hooked on a virtual universe where the boundaries between fantasy and reality become dangerously blurred.
First Shorts - Saturday 19 April 2008 at 7.30pm
Eleven short, sharp new plays and monologues, exploring themes that span split personalities, love and loss, family relationships, misconceptions of race, paranoia, transgender, friendship, fantasy and attitudes towards identity.
From the realistic to the absurd, satire to high drama, this promises to be a compelling evening of contemporary theatre.
