CHOIR PREPARES FOR LAUNCH

CHOIR PREPARES FOR LAUNCH

23 March 2011

The Mike King Choir is a new London-based vocal collective who there seems to be a big buzz about.  The ensemble revisits soul, jazz and gospel classics combining uplifting performances with rich vocal harmonies.

The choir was formed when Mike King brought together some of his past and present vocal students to create a unique and innovative group and will be having their big launch at Southwark Cathedral where their inaugural CD will be available.

I went along to a recording session to see what everyone was talking about and found a great mix of happy people warming up with a version of Fly Me To The Moon that bopped along with a swing that Sinatra would have been proud of.

With a room full of singers from the Elephant, Bermondsey, Lewisham and all points South London I didn’t know where to begin, so asked to be taken to their leader. ‘The choir is made up of 30 talented singers,’ said Mr King, ‘all from different backgrounds, all brought together by a love of music.’

Rotherhithe chorister Ingrid Uhlen told me excitedly: “Mike is marvelous to work with, I have learnt so much from him, and now I get to sing in his choir!  It is a real dream come true for me.’

As well as writing, recording and performing his own music, Mike King has been teaching vocals at Goldsmiths College for 10 years and is a guest lecturer at other London institutions.

He runs various workshops nationally and internationally and works closely with the community in South London, teaching part-time at Sacred Heart School in Camberwell where he works with young people enabling them to express themselves and grow in confidence through singing. Another singer, Tara from the Elephant and Castle, gushed: ‘It feels so special to be part of MKC.  I really look forward to going to rehearsals as they're always so fun and uplifting.’

The choir have performed at Goldsmiths in recent months and already have a sturdy fan-base.  Local artist and MK Choir fan, Ed Gray, told me that, ‘The choir is amazing; there is a fantastically rich quality to their sound.’

Mike King Choir's performance at Southwark Cathedral is the official launch of the choir to enable the community to become aware of the group and what it stands for - friendship, unity and a love of music.  He told me the plans are for future gigs and more albums.

Southwark Cathedral Saturday 9th April 2011 @ 1pm. This is a free event with donations made to Lupus UK.

Mike King never fails in giving a superb and uplifting performance, whether as a solo artist, as part of a group, or in a duet with various singers(one of whom is his lovely wife Carol).I'm eagerly awaiting to hear the Mike King Chior, knowing everything Mike arranges or performs will be outstanding.
