By Michael Holland
Yankel Feather was quite a legend when he was alive, moving in artistic and bohemian circles around the country for most of his adult life, then letting his surroundings influence his work. He is still a legend now and spoke highly of among Britain’s best painters.
Feather painted right up until his death in 2009 so there is still a great body of work unseen by the public. This exhibition – Intimate Secrets – includes many paintings new to visitors, with several of dancers, one of his favourite subjects whether they are jivers or ballerinas. One of my favourites in the show is called Doin’ The Lambeth Walk.
The artist’s impressionist style brings a lot of life to the dancing works and movement even to the flowers in his still lives, and the images of his hometown Liverpool stand out. Up close you can see the quick, short brush strokes he uses, while standing away gives the full effect of his work.
With already about half a dozen paintings sold, Intimate Secrets offers the opportunity to obtain one of the remaining works of this much-respected artist.
