WEDDING AT YOUNG VIC

WEDDING AT YOUNG VIC

17 September 2007

It's exactly 50 years since The Member of the Wedding, Carson McCullers' American classic, had its London premiere at the Royal Court in a production by Tony Richardson.

Matthew Dunster, whose production of Love and Money was nominated for a 2006 Olivier Award, will direct this much-loved masterwork for a six-week run.

It is the summer of 1945 in a small town in Georgia. Tomboy Frankie shares her crazy dreams with her worldly-wise maid Berenice. Desperate to join the sophisticated world of her brother and his fiancée, she schemes to leave home and become a 'member' of their wedding.

The big hit of the 1950 Broadway season, The Member of the Wedding tells the powerful and heart warming story of a young girl about to become a woman and a mature woman watching the good times of her life slip by. This is before the civil rights movement took off, but there are strong undercurrents of seismic social change.

The Member of the Wedding is one of the small handful of plays in the world repertoire in which the balance of emotional weight is equally divided between the black and white characters.

Playwright and novelist Carson McCullers is one of the great writers of the American South. Her life-long friend Tennessee Williams described her as 'tender and devastating… She has examined the heart of man with an understanding that no other writer can hope to surpass'. Her best known works are The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and The Ballad of the Sad Café. All her novels have been filmed, including Refections in a Golden Eye which was directed by John Huston and starred Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor.
