PLAYING VIDEO games does not mean your child will turn into a potato couch, the council proved last week.

In an innovative new scheme, youngsters played sports game on a Nintendo Wii then did them for real.

The council’s Community Sports team is setting up the computer consoles across the borough to get children interested in sport.

After pretending to box with the video game, the kids can come back for the real deal, with practice lessons later in the week. “It attracts them here, and between the physical sports and the Wii sports, they definitely enjoy themselves,” Pablo Blackwood, who works on the team, said. “We go for the non-contact route,” Blackwood says. “It's a good way to get them into it. And for those who were never going to get into it, it's a nice introduction to a sport like boxing.”

Two who made the trip to the Damilola Taylor Centre last week were Dean Roberts, twelve, and his brother Darren, ten. “It's not really the real thing,” Dean says of the Wii. But then, both brothers have already done a bit of real boxing before – and Darren wouldn't mind making it a career. “Boxing is my hobby and I want to get further into it.”
