An assault on a woman on a Bermondsey estate has seen her former partner hit with a community order, and costs for damaging a door when he returned to collect his belongings.

Peter Goldsmith, 36, now of North Street in Southminster, Essex, lived on the Abbeyfield Estate but was arrested following an assault in October last year on a woman with whom he lived.

He pleaded guilty to the assault, and to a second charge of destroying a door handle on the same property, when he returned to pick up tools he had left there eleven days later.

While contemplating sentencing, District Judge Shamoon Somjee was trying to establish how much the defendant should pay in damage, and asked the lawyers present: "How much does a door handle cost?"

To which the prosecution replied: "I don't know but I believe the prices have gone down in B&Q since December."
Goldsmith was sentenced to 100 hours of community service for each offence, which he will serve concurrently, and will be required to pay £50 in damages and £60 in costs.
