LET'S HOPE the tram bid can be resurrected - it's about time someone fought a proper battle for some real transport through Southwark.

There are areas which would really benefit from nearby access to transport, especially a scheme that will take passengers up to north London. Think of what such a connection could do for the local housing market, and economy - new shops may open along the route to serve passengers and residents.

Boris Johnson said there just wasn't the money behind the Cross River Tram (CRT) scheme to take it forward, so he obviously doesn't want to go the extra mile to provide for the borough. Something in the region of £1.3billion is needed for the scheme.

Step in council leader Nick Stanton, who now says 'We are not prepared to give up fighting yet', insisting he will go to central government to get the final pieces of exploratory work funded.

Gordon Brown has spoken non-stop about revitalising the economy. If Cllr Stanton can convince the government to invest in the tram, with its potential for new construction jobs and extra transport for south London, it would be a major coup for Southwark.
