7 May 2009
A former university lecturer was refused bail after an alleged long series of wine thefts from supermarkets all over Southwark.
Peckham resident Sharon Agard, 41, who lives in Staffordshire Street, was listed to face four separate charges of stealing wine worth £159.35 from four different supermarkets in the borough.
While in court it was revealed that since then two other charges had come to light, where Agard had allegedly again entered shops and walked out without paying for wine.
The defendant allegedly failed a number of drug tests when charged.
The defence asked for an adjournment for psychiatric reports, and for Miss Agard to be bailed in order to receive any treatment.
However it was made clear by the residing judge that if the adjournment took place no bail would be granted.
Despite further pleas from the defence District Judge Shamoon Somjee stood firm and remanded the defendant in custody until her next court appearance on May 21.
